Mayhem Film Festival announces full line-up and extra weekend pass availability for 2021 edition
Posted: Tue, 14 Sep 2021 18:05
Mayhem Film Festival returns this October with a feast of horror, sci-fi and cult titles from around the world and - after a quick sell-out of weekend passes in August - a limited number of additional passes for the weekend are now on sale.
We're kicking off on Thursday 14 October with our previously announced opening film, behind-the-scenes documentary Alien On Stage, in which an unlikely group of Dorset bus drivers put on a DIY production of Alien and take it to the West End stage.
Next up this year is underwater ghost story The Deep House - also already announced - which plunges us into the depths of a submerged haunted house for a literally immersive horror experience.
Up from the vaults, Mayhem opens its archive for the second day of the festival on Friday 15 October to resurrect a lesser-seen British horror film of yesteryear - a dark gem of Gothic cinema, 1949's Queen of Spades, in which a gambler becomes obsessed with an old lady, said to have sold her soul to the devil in order to win at cards.
Friday's line-up continues with The Show, a noir-fantasy set in Northampton, written by comics legend Alan Moore. Trippy, multi-layered and shot through with droll humour, The Show is an idiosyncratic delight.
We carry on into the evening with a smart and genuinely surprising sci-fi black comedy, Night Drive, which sees a ride-share driver's life begin to fall apart when he picks up his last passenger and accidentally hits a pedestrian.
Closing the Friday night of the festivalisSouth Korean cat-and-mouse thriller, Oh-Seung Kwon's Midnight. A serial-killing psychopath is interrupted in his latest crime by a young deaf woman - and so begins a non-stop, all-night, life-or-death chase packed with tension and twists.
We're starting Saturday 16 October off with an all-animated dark fantasy horror The Spine of Night, featuring the voices of Richard E. Grant and Lucy Lawless. A psychedelic, hallucinogenic epic of outrageous violence, ancient gods and courageous heroes set in a land of magic and mysticism, The Spine of Night is unlike anything we've ever screened.
Second on Saturday is a stylish, haunting and intense psychological portrait Knocking. A woman leaves a psychiatric ward and finds herself placed alone in a new apartment where she begins to hear mysterious knocking sounds.
Feed on the blood of fresh filmmaking talent with the return of the always-popular Mayhem Short Film Showcase on Saturday afternoon, presenting a selection of scary, weird and wonderful shorts from around the world and closer to home.
From the producers of The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil comes a new experience in action – the genre-bending, high-octane sci-fi thriller Spiritwalker. A man wakes up in a different body every twelve hours, each time forced to discover who he is - all the while being pursued by a secret organisation. He must find his way back into his real body before it's too late!
This year's Mayhem Midnight Movie on Saturday night is Brian De Palma's 1974 cult classic Phantom of the Paradise. Mixing the plots of The Phantom of the Opera and Faust, and adding a great score and cool songs, this is De Palma (Carrie, Blow Out) at his most stylish and stylised – a genuine midnight movie masterpiece.
We're starting off the final day of the festival on Sunday 17 October with the hilariously hyperactive satire Get the Hell Out, where Taiwan's parliament becomes a deadly battleground when a virus transforms politicians into bloodthirsty mutant zombies.
Fresh from winning rave reviews at its international premiere at Fantasia, there's hell to pay when a lonely teenager discovers her family's connections to witchcraft in occult coming-of-age story Hellbender, from the incredibly creative Adams family.
Later on Sunday is horroranthology The Night Shift. Looking for inspiration, an artist visits a run-down housing estate and interviews the building's caretaker, who has many strange and uncanny tales to tell…
In the penultimate slot for this year's festival is the unique Nordic folktale Lamb, a strange and daring debut from special effects master-turned-director Valdimar Jóhannsson. A childless couple discover a mysterious newborn on their remote farm in Iceland. Soon they're experiencing the joy of family – but before long, family will tear them apart.
We're closing Mayhem 2021 in style withthe must-see, one-take sci-fi comedy Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes. Tokyo café owner Kato returns home from work to find a message from his future self on his computer screen… and soon this strange phenomenon gets chaotically out of hand. Praised for its inventiveness by the creator of One Cut of the Dead - which went down a storm at Mayhem 2018 – it's sure to be a festival favourite this year.
Mayhem Film Festival set to return to Broadway, Nottingham on 14-17 October 2021
Posted: Fri, 14 May 2021 18:43
Mayhem Film Festival will return this autumn to showcase the best in international horror, sci-fi and cult cinema, with the festival's 17th edition planned to run for four days from 14-17 October.
After last year hosting a slimmed-down 'Skeleton Edition' of the festival due to restrictions caused by the pandemic, organisers are hoping to move back towards the full flesh of the festival's traditional form for this year's edition, though the precise structure of the festival will remain responsive to events and any restrictions which may be in place in the autumn.
"We are very much hoping to return to a full festival at our home venue of Broadway in Nottingham, because nothing beats the full experience, but we are aware things are still evolving. Our main priority is for everyone, audiences and staff, to enjoy films in a safe environment so we're encouraging you to save the dates, but don't make plans to travel just yet. We'll continue to work with our friends at Broadway and follow government guidance in the next few months and hope to announce our exact plans in the early summer", says the team.
On the festival's return, Broadway's Marketing Director Stewart Terry says: "We're so excited to host Mayhem once again and we hope to do so in all its gory glory. The festival always brings people together at Broadway and we can't wait for them to not only enjoy some of the most exciting films from across the world, but also experience our refurbed venue."
In addition to announcing their 2021 dates, Mayhem Film Festival is also excited to open their call for short films for this year's edition. Over the years, Mayhem grew from a single short film programme to a four-day event, but its shorts programme remains at the heart of every edition. Mayhem Film Festival are looking for horror, sci-fi and cult short films, produced after 1 January 2020 and that are under 22-minute long. More information on how to submit films is available at https://filmfreeway.com/MayhemFilmFestival
In previous years, Mayhem has welcomed many filmmakers from around the world such as Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star WarsStory) for Monsters,Mark Gatiss (The League of Gentlemen, Sherlock) for a special masterclass, Ben Wheatley for a preview screening of Sightseers, Nicolas Roeg for a special screening of Don't Look Now at St Mary's Church in Nottingham, and cult Canadian collective, Astron-6 for The Editor and The Void. Mayhem Film Festival has also hosted special events such as screenings with specially-commissioned live scores from 8MM Orchestra, two exclusive live stage reading of unmade Hammer Films screenplays, The Unquenchable Thirst of Dracula in 2015 and Zeppelin V. Pterodactyls in 2017, and a live performance of Tales of HP Lovecraft by The Duke St Workshop featuring British actor Laurence R. Harvey.
Planning is currently underway for Mayhem Film Festival's 17th edition with more information and announcements coming soon.
Mayhem Film Festival will take place at Broadway, Nottingham on 14 – 17 October 2021. For more information, please visit https://www.mayhemfilmfestival.com/
Mayhem Film Festival announces BOYS FROM COUNTY HELL, PSYCHO GOREMAN, THE OAK ROOM and the ever popular SHORT FILM SHOWCASE
Posted: Fri, 11 Sep 2020 15:21
Following on from July's launch of Mayhem Film Festival: Skeleton Edition, we're proud to announce the titles screening physically for this year's 16th edition of Broadway's festival of horror.
First up is our opening film, Irish horror-comedy Boys from County Hell, which sees the residents of a sleepy Irish village (whose claim to fame is the dubious legend that Bram Stoker once spent a night in the local pub where he was inspired to write 'Dracula') in a fight for survival as they discover there may be more to the myth of a local bloodsucking creature than they thought. From the producers of last
year's Mayhem Film Festival favourite Extra Ordinary, Boys from County Hell promises to be another raucous Mayhem crowd-pleaser.
We also can't wait to bring you Psycho Goreman, from the director of Mayhem favourites Manborg, Bio-Cop and The Void, Steve Kostanski (formerly of Astron-6). When siblings Mimi and Luke unwittingly resurrect an ancient alien overlord using a magical amulet, they force the monster to obey their childish whims, and accidentally attract a rogues' gallery of intergalactic assassins to small-town suburbia. Called "the craziest, bloodiest horror-movie of 2020" by Bloody Disgusting, we can't wait to screen this journey into madness.
Rounding off this year's programme is the return of our ever-popular Short Film Showcase (titles to be announced soon) and our closing film, The Oak Room, a violent Canadian story of mistaken identity and double crosses starring Breaking Bad's RJ Mitte. During a raging snowstorm, a drifter returns home to the blue-collar bar located in the remote Canadian town where he was born. When he offers to settle an old debt with a grizzled bartender (Peter Outerbridge - Nikita, Orphan Black) by telling him a story, the night's events quickly spins out of control.
Tickets for our Skeleton Edition are on sale from Friday 18 September.
WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE.

Mayhem Film Festival reveals full line-up for 2019 edition
Posted: Tue, 03 Sep 2019 15:15
Mayhem Film Festival is proud to announce the full line-up for its 2019 edition, which will take place at Broadway Cinema, Nottingham on 10-13 October. The festival showcases the best features and short films in horror, sci-fi and cult cinema, through premieres, previews, and special events each year.
Mayhem is delighted to open this year's festival with hilarious horror comedy Extra Ordinary on Thursday 10 October. A small-town driving instructor with supernatural abilities tries to get through life without communicating with the dead - but the spirits have other ideas. Also screening on Thursday is the brain-twisting Daniel Isn't Real, in which a deeply troubled student summons his childhood "imaginary" friend but his grip on reality slips as the malignant alter ego unleashes a vicious, evil side.
From the producers of hallucinatory fever dream Mandy (a sell-out at Mayhem 2018) comes the most sought-after – and similarly psychedelic - genre film of the year, Richard Stanley's Color Out of Space, screening at this year's festival on Friday 11 October. This eerie H.P. Lovecraft adaptation sees a meteor fall to earth and onto the property of a New England family — its increasingly unhinged patriarch played by the one-and-only Nicolas Cage — with insidious and delirious results. It's a double-helping of Cage this year as his 1989 cult black comedy Vampire's Kiss takes the coveted Saturday late-night slot - it's Nic Cage at his full-powered, cockroach-eating, and utterly insane best.
The 15th edition of Mayhem will play host to three UK Premieres, with exclusive first screenings of high-octane serial killer thriller The Gangster, The Cop, The DevilPolish historical drama Sword of God (The Mute), and outrageous survival horror The Pool – all previously announced.
Taking a look back into the archives, Mayhem is pleased to present a rare screening of 1967 Russian folk horror Viy, and 1987's cult sci-fi favourite The Hidden, featuring a standout performance from Twin Peaks' Kyle MacLachlan as an alien-hunting FBI agent.
Mayhem 2019's final day will begin with the unclassifiable Bullets of Justice. Having created human-pig hybrid super soldiers, mankind now finds itself dominated by these "Muzzles" who farm and eat human beings – a truly "what did I just watch?" experience to start off your Sunday morning.
Mayhem's 15th edition also includes screenings of female-led horror She Never Died and genre-bending monster movie, Something Else – both previously announced – alongside preview screenings of the gleefully explosive revenge rampage Why Don't You Just Die!, high-suspense thriller Door Lock, and sci-fi nightmare Vivarium, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots. Vengeful spirits are stirred into gory action in haunted house horror Girl on the Third Floor, and twisted thrill-ride Come to Daddy, starring Elijah Wood, will close the festival on Sunday.
Mayhem's ever-popular Short Film Showcase and the fiendish film quiz, The Flinterrogation - hosted by author David Flint - both return to round off this year's line-up.
Early Bird passes will remain on sale at the discounted price of £70 until Sunday 8 September 2019. Individual tickets and full festival passes – at the standard price of £80 – will go on sale at 10AM on Monday 9 September. We will also be introducing a new 'Frankenstein Ticket Package' for this year's festival – piece together your choice of five films over the weekend for just £30.
Mayhem Film Festival takes place on 10-13 October 2019 at Broadway, Nottingham.
Mayhem Film Festival announces SHE NEVER DIED, THE POOL and THE GANGSTER, THE COP, THE DEVIL
Posted: Thu, 22 Aug 2019 14:00
With its 15th edition now less than two months away, Mayhem Film Festival is proud to announce the next three titles from its 2019 programme.
Mayhem will host the UK Premiere of all-action, South Korean serial killer thriller The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil. A sardonic cop reluctantly teams up with a wounded crime boss (the remarkable Ma Dong-seok of Train to Busan) to track and stop a serial killer, but their criminal rivals stand – violently - in their way. See it way ahead of the upcoming Stallone-produced US remake.
Also in this year's line-up is She Never Died, a female-fronted companion piece to 2015 cult film He Never Died. Olunike Adeliyi stars as an immortal cannibal who seeks out the darkest souls humanity has to offer in the hunt for her next meal, when she saves a woman from dying a grisly death on a snuff web channel and proceeds to hunt down the culprits.
Rounding off this second wave of announcements is another UK Premiere, Thai action-horror The Pool, where a couple is trapped in an empty swimming pool with only a hungry crocodile for company. Packed with over-the-top twists and some genuinely shocking surprises, survival horror has never been so much ludicrous, logic-testing fun.
Mayhem's full 2019 line-up will be announced in early September. Discounted Early Bird Passes are still available to purchase at £70 each.
Mayhem Film Festival announces EXTRA ORDINARY, SWORD OF GOD (THE MUTE), SOMETHING ELSE and first guests
Posted: Wed, 24 Jul 2019 10:44
Following its biggest ever edition last year, Mayhem Film Festival is back for 2019 and proud to announce the first three titles for this year's festival.
Opening Mayhem's 15th edition is Irish supernatural comedy Extra Ordinary. In rural Ireland, reluctant medium Rose is called upon to save a local teen from the town's resident one-hit wonder rock star, who has somewhat satanic plans to bring his career back from the dead. Expect exorcisms, and plenty of ectoplasm. Mayhem is delighted to welcome special guests from the film for a Q&A after the screening.
Next in this year's line-up is the UK Premiere of immersive Polish historical drama Sword of God (The Mute). In the early Middle Ages, two Christian knights arrive at a pagan village hidden deep in the mountains. Soon, their faith and the bond between them are brutally tested as events spiral out of control, and many will die in the name of God.
Rounding off the first wave of announcements is the genre-bending Something Else. From directors Jeremy Gardner (cult buddy-movie-zombie-outbreak film The Battery) and Christian Stella comes a completely unique take on the monster movie – a love story. When Hank's girlfriend vanishes, leaving only a note behind, his sanity begins to slip and something mysterious stirs in the woods that surround his home.
More events, films and guests for Mayhem 2019 will be announced later in the summer.
Early Bird passes are on sale now at £70, allowing access to the full festival including previews, premieres, and special events.
Mayhem Film Festival will take place at Broadway, Nottingham on 10 – 13 October 2019, and more news will be revealed over the summer about this year's edition.
